Voice From the Global South: Architecture from the Margins

Themes for Paper Submission

This conference welcomes submissions that delve into the connections between resilience, sustainability, climate change, and the built environment in the Global South. It aims to spotlight innovative architectural and urban strategies that tackle environmental, social, and infrastructural challenges, promoting adaptability and a resilient future. The following themes encourage diverse perspectives, emphasizing marginalized voices and localized narratives in architecture:

  1. Urban Design for Resilient and Sustainable Cities
This theme explores how marginalized urban areas in the Global South are redefining public spaces, infrastructure, and environmental resilience. Contributions may investigate community-led urban interventions, adaptive reuse, and spatial justice, highlighting sustainable, locally-driven urban solutions that challenge conventional planning approaches.

  2. Architectural Design: Cultural Resilience and Sustainability
Submissions under this theme focus on architectural adaptability, sustainability, and innovation in the Global South. Topics may include climate-responsive materials, culturally sensitive design, and the integration of heritage conservation with modernization to foster long-term sustainability in the built environment.

  3. Housing, Settlement, and Environmental Equity
This theme addresses housing models that respond to rapid urbanization, climate change, resource scarcity, and socio-economic inequalities. Topics may cover kampung, informal settlements, resilient housing solutions, community-led development, and policies that empower local communities to ensure equitable access to safe and sustainable living environments.

  4. History, Theory, and Criticism in Architecture
This category invites historical, theoretical, and critical perspectives on architecture in the Global South to examine how marginalized histories and narratives shape architectural discourse, particularly looking at the intersections of climate change and environmental concerns with postcolonial and decolonial discourses. Contributions may explore the reinterpretation of traditional forms, Nusantara architecture, sustainability in historic preservation, or critiques of how colonial legacies continue to influence urban and architectural landscapes.

  5. Science, Technology, and Infrastructure for a Resilient FutureThis theme examines how advancements in science, technology, and infrastructure contribute to sustainable, climate-adaptive architecture and urbanism. Topics may include green building technologies, digital design tools, climate-resilient infrastructure, and innovations in health-conscious built environments that empower communities in the Global South.

Through these themes, the conference seeks to advance a transformative, inclusive, and forward-looking architectural discourse that prioritizes resilience, sustainability, and environmental adaptability in shaping the built environment of the Global South.
