Voice From the Global South: Architecture from the Margins
Themes for Paper Submission
The conference invites submissions that engage with the following thematic areas, each designed to spotlight localized narratives and underrepresented voices in architecture. Contributions that offer context-specific insights and challenge dominant paradigms are highly encouraged.

-
Urban Design in the Global South
This theme seeks explorations of how urban environments in marginalized areas of the Global South contribute to new interpretations of public space, everyday resilience, and informal economies. Submissions may examine community-led design initiatives, creative adaptive reuse, or strategies for spatial equity that offer alternatives to conventional planning models.
-
Architectural Design: Cultural Resilience and Innovation
Papers in this category may focus on design approaches that reflect and support the cultural identity, traditions, and evolving needs of local communities. Topics could include the inventive use of vernacular materials, context-responsive architecture, and the dialectics between design thinking and representation of localized narratives.
-
Housing and Settlement: Narratives from the Margins
This theme addresses how housing solutions emerge from communities facing the pressures of rapid urbanization, limited resources, and structural inequality. Discussions may include informal housing practices, local spatial knowledge, participatory housing development, and policies that empower local actors over top-down interventions.
-
History, Theory, and Criticism in Architecture
Submissions are encouraged to critically engage with architectural discourse by highlighting overlooked histories, alternative theoretical perspectives, and grounded critiques of dominant narratives. Potential topics include decolonial theory, reinterpretations of vernacular heritage, and examinations of how colonial legacies continue to shape design practices.
-
Science and Technology in Architecture for Empowerment
This theme invites contributions that explore how technology and scientific methods are adapted to serve the needs of communities in the Global South. Relevant topics may include sustainable construction techniques, climate-adaptive design, material experimentation, or digital platforms that support inclusive participation in shaping the built environment.
